HNO3 + KOH → KNO3 + H2O

Word equation: Nitric acid + Potassium hydroxide → Potassium nitrate + water

Type of Chemical Reaction: For this reaction we have a neutralization reaction.

Balancing Strategies: This is a neutralization reaction with the nitric acid and potassium hydroxide combine to form a salt (KNO2) and water.

Be sure to count both of the hydrogen atoms on the reactants side of the equation. We have one hydrogen in the nitric acid and one in the potassium hydroxide. That gives us a total of two hydrogen atoms.
